Bringing Vision Back: Our Rural Eye Care Outreach

Every year, millions of people in underserved regions live with avoidable blindness due to cataracts, refractive errors, or untreated infections. At Cilias Health Foundation, we refuse to let geography determine access to care. In partnership with local hospitals and volunteer optometrists, our Rural Eye Care Outreach aims to restore sight and hope.

In July 2024, our mobile clinic traveled to six remote communities across Kaduna and Plateau states. Villagers who had never seen an eye specialist before were screened, treated, and, in many cases, given free eyeglasses on the spot. Our surgical team also performed over 120 cataract operations in just one week

Stories of Impact

Among them was 68-year-old farmer Musa Abdullahi, who hadn’t seen clearly in years. “I thought I would die blind,” he said after surgery. “Now I can see my grandchildren again.” His joy mirrors that of countless others who received care through this initiative.

Key Achievements

 • Screened over 2,000 patients in rural communities.
 • Distributed 800 pairs of prescription eyeglasses.
 • Performed 120 free cataract surgeries
 • Trained 15 local volunteers in basic vision screening.

Our goal for 2025 is to expand the program to ten more communities, ensuring that no one loses their sight simply because they were born far from a hospital.
